NVIDIA Earned Nearly $60 Billion. Why Did Free Cash Flow Fall by Half?
Future World Signal · Issue 010
Q2 net income reached $59.69 billion while free cash flow fell from $48.55 billion to $21.34 billion. This was neither fake profit nor runaway capital expenditure. Hypergrowth absorbed cash into receivables, inventory and prepayments, turning cash conversion into the next test.

Profit $59.7bn
FCF $21.3bn
01 · DIRECT ANSWER
Why did cash flow fall while profit surged?
Net income recognizes accounting profit earned in the period; free cash flow measures cash received after capital spending. NVIDIA reported $59.69 billion of Q2 net income, but only $24.08 billion of operating cash flow and $21.34 billion of free cash flow. FCF fell 56% sequentially but still rose 59% year over year. Cash conversion dropped sharply; cash generation did not collapse versus last year.
The income statement asks how much was earned. The cash-flow statement asks whether the money arrived. In hypergrowth, those answers can temporarily diverge.
02 · RECEIVABLES
The largest use: customers have not paid all the cash yet
The change in accounts receivable absorbed $22.35 billion, the quarter's largest cash drag. Revenue can be recognized before customer cash arrives. Receivables often expand during hypergrowth; the real tests are whether collections keep lagging revenue, customer concentration rises and balances remain collectible.
03 · INVENTORY & PREPAYMENTS
The second use: funding the next delivery wave
Inventory absorbed $5.78 billion and prepayments and other assets absorbed another $5.50 billion. Rubin production and broader systems sales require NVIDIA to secure memory, advanced packaging, components and capacity early. This can be deliberate preparation for demand or future inventory risk; revenue, turns and margins separate the two.
04 · NON-CASH PROFIT
Not all of the near-$60 billion profit was operating cash
Net income included about $7.77 billion of net gains on equity securities. Mark-to-market gains lift accounting profit without producing equivalent operating cash unless assets are sold. Core cash quality therefore requires separating investment gains from working-capital movements.
05 · NOT CAPEX
Capital expenditure did not eat the cash
Purchases of property, equipment and intangibles were $2.68 billion, with $59 million of related principal payments. That is far smaller than the sequential FCF decline. Working capital was the main absorber: deliver first and collect later; stock inputs now and convert them into future revenue.
06 · ACIS LENS
What does this mean for the AI cycle?
For now, this looks more like hypergrowth working-capital volatility than a demand inflection: revenue, guidance and Rubin production remain strong. Yet it directly links to ACIS's financing-quality watch. NVIDIA receivables are the mirror image of customer AI CapEx. Receivables persistently outgrowing revenue, longer collection periods, higher allowances and accumulating inventory would turn a watch item into fundamental risk.
07 · NEXT CHECKS
Four things to watch next quarter
Track whether receivables growth normalizes versus revenue; operating cash flow reconnects with net income; Q3 growth and Rubin deliveries absorb inventory; and gross margin holds near 74%. If growth continues and conversion rebounds, Q2 was timing. If revenue slows while receivables and inventory keep rising, the flag turns red.
FAQ
Key Questions|FAQ
Does the FCF drop prove poor earnings quality?
Not from one quarter. FCF still rose 59% Y/Y and working capital caused most of the drag. Collections, inventory and allowances need several quarters of evidence.
Do higher receivables mean customers cannot pay?
No. Rapid delivery growth also raises receivables. Risk appears when receivables keep outgrowing revenue, terms lengthen, concentration rises or credit losses increase.
Is this an AI-demand slowdown signal?
Not currently. Q2 revenue, Q3 guidance and Rubin production remain strong. It is an early financing and cash-conversion watch signal.
What matters next quarter?
Read operating cash flow, receivables, inventory, FCF conversion and gross margin together—not EPS alone.

Source: NVIDIA FY2027 Q2 official results and cash-flow statement. Free cash flow follows NVIDIA's definition. 'Halved' refers to a roughly 56% sequential decline; FCF still increased about 59% year over year. We do not treat one quarter of working-capital movement as proof of credit deterioration.
