IBM Connects 240 Qubits Across Four Metre-Scale Links as IonQ Moves Networking Into Field Deployment
Quantum Computing Research Radar | Issue 009 | 30 October 2026
Modular computing and heterogeneous quantum networking cross new systems-engineering gates; 99% state transfer and a $7.5m Phase 2 are not fault-tolerant universal computing, incremental contract value or commercial cash flow.
THE 10-SECOND VIEW
Modular computing and heterogeneous quantum networking cross new systems-engineering gates; 99% state transfer and a $7.5m Phase 2 are not fault-tolerant universal computing, incremental contract value or commercial cash flow.
On 27 October, IBM disclosed four 80-centimetre l-couplers connecting two 120-qubit Nighthawk R1 processors, with 99% average state-transfer fidelity, 99.3% best, and 94.75% average fidelity for a distant CZ gate. Only a subset of qubits was wired, while IBM lists yield, reproducibility and more links as next steps. The same day, IonQ disclosed $7.5m of AFRL Phase 2 funding to add free-space optics, frequency conversion, automated control and upgraded interfaces to the first-generation Rome, New York network. IonQ explicitly says the $7.5m was contemplated within the $21.1m collaboration announced in 2025 and is not supplemental. Industry maturity rises 54 to 56, IBM 84 to 88, IonQ 77 to 78, and manufacturing/supply 68 to 70. Commercial revenue, customer ROI and FCF do not rise automatically with the technical scores.

Audio transcript
Two related systems-engineering advances define the week. IBM connected two one-hundred-twenty-qubit processors with four eighty-centimetre links and achieved ninety-nine-percent average state transfer, but distant two-qubit gates averaged only ninety-four-point-seven-five percent and only part of each processor was wired. IonQ received seven-point-five million dollars for Phase Two field networking with free-space optics, frequency conversion and automated control. That amount sits inside the original twenty-one-point-one-million-dollar collaboration and must not be double-counted. Engineering maturity rises; commercial cash-flow judgment holds.

02 · EVIDENCE HIERARCHY
Separate state transfer, distant gates, field networks and commercial value
| Signal | Verifiable evidence | ACIS read | Evidence boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| IBM four-link interconnect | Two 120-qubit Nighthawk R1 chips connect with four 80cm l-couplers; average transfer fidelity is 99%, best 99.3%. | Multiple links between modules are a stronger scalable-architecture proof than a single-link prototype. | Only a subset of qubits was wired; yield, reproducibility, link count and error rates still need improvement. |
| Distant CZ gate | State transfer constructs a cross-module CZ gate with 94.75% average two-qubit-gate fidelity across four links. | Evidence advances from transport into remote entanglement and gate operation. | This fidelity does not prove scalable fault tolerance or long application circuits. |
| IonQ Phase 2 | $7.5m supports free-space optics, two frequency converters, automated monitoring/failure software and upgraded QNICs. | Quantum networking advances from a physical foundation into field interoperability and operations control. | This is an AFRL research-platform expansion—not a proven production network, customer ROI or recurring revenue. |
| Contract accounting | IonQ states that $7.5m was contemplated within the $21.1m collaboration announced in 2025 and is not supplemental. | The delivery stage advances without creating a second order value. | The release gives no current recognized revenue, margin, collection, CFO or FCF. |
03 · VALUE CAPTURE
Technical Value Created ≠ Corporate Value Captured ≠ Investor Return
| Object | Current view | Next proof | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| IBM | The modular roadmap gains stronger experimental evidence, but remains an R&D milestone rather than a commercial workload. | Higher distant-gate fidelity, more links/qubits, yield, repeatability, error correction and paid utilization. | Accumulating link errors, cooling/control complexity, roadmap slippage and valuation extrapolation. |
| IonQ / IONQ | Networking advances from Phase 1 foundation to Phase 2 field interoperability; incremental revenue remains unproven. | Milestone acceptance, revenue recognition, collections, stable operation, node use, customer ROI, margin and FCF. | Double-counting staged funding or mistaking a research network for production use. |
| Photonics, microwave and control supply chain | Long links, conversion, QNICs and automated control become more important. | Named suppliers, orders, yield, unit cost, shipments, revenue and customer concentration. | Platforms internalize value or suppliers fail to reach high-margin scale. |
| Quantinuum / D-Wave and other modalities | Competition continues moving from raw qubit counts toward logical reliability, modularity, utilization and cash. | Same tasks, error definitions, full-stack long circuits, paid workloads and capital-efficiency comparisons. | Incomparable modalities are ranked by headline fidelity. |
04 · THESIS → EVIDENCE → UPDATE
Quantum computing is moving from single-chip metrics into modular systems and operable networks
Technical milestones create durable company and investor value only when repeatable systems convert into paid use, customer ROI, revenue quality and FCF.
IBM connects two Nighthawks over four metre-scale channels and executes a distant gate; IonQ expands an AFRL network into free-space, conversion and automated control.
Systems engineering strengthens while commercial judgment holds. Transfer, remote gates and field networks pass new gates, but fault-tolerant full-stack operation, external replication, paid utilization, revenue purity and capital efficiency remain open.
Portfolio implication | Research only
- Interconnect quality matters more than adding qubits:Two hundred forty physical qubits create system value only if link error, gate fidelity and QEC overhead remain controlled.
- Do not double-count staged funding:IonQ's $7.5m sits within the original $21.1m collaboration.
- Field deployment is not production use:The AFRL platform improves deliverability without proving enterprise SLA, customer ROI or recurring cash flow.
- Keep all positions human-approved:The Weekly does not automatically alter IBM, IONQ, QNT, QBTS or other real positions.
05 · RISKS & NEXT VALIDATION
Counterevidence, uncertainty and next proof
94.75% remote-CZ fidelity remains far from fault-tolerant long algorithms.
More links may magnify packaging, calibration, heat, crosstalk and service complexity.
Research platforms, partnerships and demos lack disclosed paid jobs, renewals and customer ROI.
Staged contracts, acquired revenue, hardware delivery and recurring cloud revenue must stay separate.
Higher technical scores may be extrapolated into near-term revenue, profit or FCF.
- Next 7 days — Independent technical review clarifies IBM methods, error definitions and four-link data; AFRL scope is clarified.
Warning: The market repeats 99% or 240 qubits while ignoring 94.75% distant gates and partial wiring. - Next 30 days — IBM shows more links, yield and repeated runs; IonQ completes hardware/software milestones.
Warning: Field integration slips or staged funding is double-counted as a new order. - Next 90 days — Cross-module QEC, longer circuits, external replication, paid load, revenue recognition, collections and margin emerge.
Warning: Systems metrics rise while commercial revenue and cash conversion do not.

Evidence through 30 October 2026, 17:00 Beijing time. IBM metrics come from its 27 October technical article; IonQ funding and Phase 2 scope come from its investor-relations release. IBM's first-of-kind and IonQ's leadership language are company statements; this report uses verifiable parameters and preserves external-replication boundaries. The $7.5m is not added to the $21.1m again. Undisclosed revenue recognition, margin, collections, customer ROI and FCF remain UNKNOWN. ACIS scores measure evidence maturity and are not investment advice.
