HSBC's 18.8% Nine-Month RoTE Confirms Quality—But 1.94× TNAV Is Not Yet a Great Price
ACIS Investment Intelligence | Growth & Quality Value Scan | Issue 010 | 27 October 2026
HSBC reported $10.0bn of third-quarter profit before tax and $18.7bn of revenue excluding notable items on 27 October 2026. Annualised RoTE was 18.2% for Q3 and 18.8% for the first nine months excluding notable items. Banking NII, a 1.60% NIM and continued dividends and buybacks pass the quality gate. At a $91.21 ADR, five ordinary shares per ADS and $9.41 of TNAV per ordinary share, however, P/TNAV is about 1.94×. That price requires durable high returns and leaves insufficient margin of safety. HSBC moves from Quality Core / Do Not Chase to Quality Core / Valuation & Revision Gate, not to a new Quality Value candidate. New Growth: 0. New Quality Value: 0.

The one-minute brief
The material change is a cleaner distinction between company quality and purchase price. HSBC's spread income, wealth and transaction-banking fees, 18%-plus RoTE and capital return confirm better corporate value capture. Yet credit charges now include a US fraud-related sponsor exposure, Hong Kong commercial real estate and Middle East uncertainty; CET1 also declined sequentially and the ADR is near its representative six-month high. Standard Chartered reports tomorrow, while MSFT, GOOGL and ANET are entering earnings gates. The correct action is to wait for revisions and a valuation reset, not front-run them.
Audio transcript
Quality is confirmed, but the price gate has not cleared. HSBC delivered ten billion dollars of third-quarter profit before tax excluding notable items. Annualised RoTE was eighteen point two percent for the quarter and eighteen point eight percent for nine months. At ninety-one dollars and twenty-one cents per ADR, five ordinary shares per ADS and nine dollars and forty-one cents of TNAV per ordinary share, the stock trades near one point nine four times TNAV. That valuation requires durable high returns, while the drawdown is far below the twenty percent review trigger. HSBC remains behind a valuation and revisions gate. Standard Chartered, Microsoft, Alphabet and Arista are all approaching earnings events. There are no new Growth or Quality Value candidates, and every real action requires Human Approval.

04 · VALUATION AND EXPECTATIONS
A strong bank can still be fully priced
| Scenario | RoTE | Payout | Terminal P/TNAV | Total value incl. dividends | 4-year CAGR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tail | 10% | 30% | 0.90× | ~$49 | ~−14% |
| Bear | 13% | 50% | 1.25× | ~$89 | ~−1% |
| Base | 15.5% | 50% | 1.70× | ~$124 | ~8% |
| Bull | 18% | 50% | 2.20× | ~$165 | ~16% |
The four-year sensitivity starts at $91.21 per ADS and uses $9.41 of TNAV per ordinary share and five ordinary shares per ADS. RoTE, payout and terminal P/TNAV are scenarios, with simplified dividends included; outputs are not price targets. Roughly 1.94× current P/TNAV requires about 16.6% sustainable RoTE assuming 10% cost of equity and 3% growth. A 1.30–1.55× research zone equates to roughly $61–$73 per ADS and is not a buy order.

THESIS → EVIDENCE → UPDATE
Quality improved; expected return did not
Thesis
Returns in quality financials require normalized RoTE, capital return and purchase P/TNAV to work together; high RoTE cannot replace margin of safety.
Evidence
Update
HSBC's quality evidence improves, but its selection state only refines from Do Not Chase to Valuation & Revision Gate. STAN enters an earnings gate. AIA and Manulife are unchanged, and no formal candidate emerges from tech, energy, utilities, healthcare or REITs.
RISKS AND 90-DAY REVIEW
Return durability
The current multiple requires durable mid-to-high-teens RoTE; rates, deposit beta and credit cost can lower it.
Credit concentration
The US sponsor exposure, Hong Kong CRE and Middle East uncertainty contradict a risk-free RoTE reading.
Comparability
Bank, life-insurance and diversified-financial RoTE, ROE, NBV and capital ratios are not mechanically comparable.
Event risk
STAN, MSFT, GOOGL and ANET have not reported this cycle; pre-earnings revisions would create false precision.
Model risk
P/TNAV scenarios are highly sensitive to cost of equity, growth, payout and terminal multiple; they are not targets.

FAQ
Five questions that prevent a price-only decision
Why is HSBC not the Quality Value pick?
Quality passes, but roughly 1.94× TNAV near a six-month high leaves insufficient margin of safety.
Can 18.8% RoTE simply be capitalized?
No. It is the nine-month ex-notables measure and must survive rate, credit, cost and capital-return tests.
Has HSBC triggered drawdown re-entry review?
No. Against a representative six-month high near $95.22, the drawdown is about 4%, below the 20% and 30% thresholds.
Why not front-run Standard Chartered?
Its formal Q3 data arrive on 28 October; inferring new EPS revisions from old data violates the evidence rule.
Does this report require a portfolio action?
No. Every real investment, trade, position and client action requires Human Approval.
