Amazon (AMZN)
AWS grew 39.3% with a calculated 38.65% operating margin, while group revenue and GAAP EPS missed the source forecast ranges. Trailing free cash flow was negative $42.357B. Stronger operations do not yet establish attractive valuation or sufficient shareholder cash returns.
AWS revenue $45.984B; growth 39.3%
Group $28.076B; AWS contributes about 63.3%
Trailing free cash flow negative $42.357B
Official results checked; full owner-cash and valuation bridges pending
01 · RESEARCH BRIEF
The one-minute brief
Amazon’s operating improvement and capital consumption moved along different paths. Revenue was $201.944B, operating income $28.076B and GAAP EPS $1.89. Three of six bounded source forecasts were inside their ranges, and three were outside. This is not six independent tests: AWS revenue and growth are closely related. The source-stated freeze is 29 October at 12:19 ET; the archive does not independently prove prior public availability. This review leaves the forecast record unchanged.
Audio transcript
Amazon’s third-quarter review shows AWS growth of 39.3 percent and an operating margin of about 38.65 percent. Trailing free cash flow was negative 42.357 billion dollars. Three of six bounded forecasts were inside range. Revenue and EPS were below the ranges while operating income exceeded its range. Operating quality and shareholder cash returns require separate judgment. Complete investment, lease and valuation bridges remain pending.

Why does this change matter?
Stronger operations; cash validation incomplete
- What is confirmed
- AWS revenue $45.984B and operating income $17.773B; group operating income $28.076B.

03 · EVIDENCE & ANALYSIS
Evidence and analysis
01|AWS: annual leverage improves, sequential margin falls
AWS operating income grew about 55%, ahead of revenue growth of 39.3%. Dividing $17.773B profit by $45.984B revenue gives 38.65%, versus roughly 34.6% a year earlier and 39.4% in Q2 2026. Annual improvement and sequential decline can coexist.
AWS generated about 63.3% of group operating income. Utilization, unit costs and depreciation therefore matter to consolidated profit, but one quarter does not establish sustainable capital returns.
02|Retail and advertising: normalize timing first
North American revenue rose 6% and operating profit about 82%; international operating profit also increased. Amazon says Prime Day moving to Q2 in most large markets reduced reported group annual growth by about 400 basis points. Do not mechanically apply that adjustment to every segment or treat it as new revenue.
Advertising grew about 12% at constant currency; management expects high-teens growth in Q4. Reported-currency and constant-currency measures differ, and guidance still requires delivery.
03|EPS: separate operations from investment revaluation
US generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) earnings per share (EPS) of $1.89 were $0.06 below the forecast floor. Revenue was $0.056B below its floor, while operating income exceeded its ceiling by $0.576B.
The prior-year quarter included $9.5B of pretax Anthropic investment gains. Non-recurring revaluation is not recurring operating profit. The next model should bridge AWS, North America and International profit to non-operating items, taxes and diluted shares.
04|Negative free cash flow: upfront investment or weak recovery?
Trailing operating cash flow rose 28.8%, but net cash property-and-equipment purchases rose 81.8%. Free cash flow moved from positive $14.788B to negative $42.357B, a decline of about $57.1B.
The company still guides to about $220B of 2026 cash CapEx. Do not extrapolate a negative quarter or trailing period forever, or assume strong AI demand guarantees payback. Track revenue recognition, utilization, depreciation, inference costs and useful lives.
05|Forward guidance and unverified comments
Official Q4 guidance is $240–247B revenue and $28.5–33.5B operating income. The release includes management’s expectation of AWS revenue growth above 40% in both 2027 and 2028. These are forecasts, not already recognized or guaranteed contract revenue.
The source also cites call comments that 2027 spending will be materially higher. The transcript was not independently retrieved in this publication check, so that reference remains pending and is not confirmed numerical guidance. No 2027 spending figure is invented.
06|Owner cash and valuation: missing bridges remain
A complete owner-cash model requires annual operating cash flow, cash and lease payments, maintenance and growth investment, stock-based compensation dilution, repurchases, debt and future shares. Avoid double-counting stock-based compensation and dilution.
Detailed 10-Q reconciliation was not completed here; this does not establish that no filing exists. Missing cash, debt and commitment data preclude a precise target price. Do not apply a price-to-free-cash-flow multiple mechanically to negative cash flow. Reverse-engineer the cash recovery required by market valuation in subsequent work.
07|Downside and recovery: four remaining tests
Survival: can existing cash and operating cash flow fund commitments if financing worsens for two years? Earnings recovery: can revenue, margins and cash recover after a downturn? Shareholder protection: would recovery require material dilution? Valuation recovery: can earnings and cash deliver returns without the old premium multiple?
Cash, debt, lease and future-share bridges remain incomplete, so these stress tests are pending. Positive operating evidence does not mean all four have passed.
05 · VALIDATION & RISKS
What to watch next
10-Q and commitments
Reconcile compensation, lease payments, procurement obligations, cash and debt.
What would weaken the view: Treat OCF less PPE as a complete economic shareholder return.
2027 investment
Verify call wording and quantitative disclosures against utilization and incremental profit.
What would weaken the view: Treat a growth outlook as a cash-payback guarantee.
Cross-company comparability
Align Google, Microsoft and Amazon cash spending, leases, cloud margins and recognition.
What would weaken the view: Rank investments from one quarter of margins.
What would change our view?
AWS faces competition, utilization and depreciation risk; capital payback remains uncertain. Some call references, detailed filings and valuation are unverified. This article contains no personalized allocation or trading instructions.
06 · FAQ
Key questions
Did every forecast land inside its range?
No. Three of six were inside. Revenue and EPS were below; operating income was above. AWS revenue and growth are correlated tests.
Why can strong profit coexist with negative free cash flow?
Capital purchases grew faster than operating cash flow, while capitalized spending is expensed over time through depreciation.
Is above-40% AWS growth guaranteed revenue?
No. It is management’s outlook in the release, subject to capacity, demand and recognition.
Is Great Price established?
No. Cash, leases, debt, dilution and valuation bridges remain incomplete.
Does this overwrite the forecast archive?
No. The forecast archive and review have separate identities and related links.
