AI infrastructure financing remains open, but the era when GPUs alone guaranteed cheap money is ending. Lambda combined an investment-grade customer, GPU collateral and cash-flow-matched amortization to fund at SOFR plus three hundred basis points. CoreWeave paid SOFR plus five hundred fifty basis points and must absorb renewal and re-leasing risk because customer contracts are shorter than its debt. Oracle also shows that very large remaining performance obligations do not automatically become free cash flow. Capital is repricing AI projects around customer credit, contract duration, power delivery and cash-flow coverage. The cycle is still expanding, but contract quality is now the second gate.

What changed in the thesis?

AI financing is becoming contract-and-credit backed

Prior thesis
Our prior view was that AI did not lack capital, but low-cost funding was becoming reserved for higher-quality customers and projects.
New evidence
Lambda funded an investment-grade offtaker with GPU collateral and amortization aligned to contracted cash flows at SOFR plus 300 basis points. CoreWeave priced a comparable facility at SOFR plus 550 basis points, with debt maturity beyond average customer-contract duration. Oracle simultaneously reported $664 billion of RPO, negative $5 billion quarterly free cash flow and a completed $20 billion equity raise.
Updated view
The thesis strengthens. Capital is not abandoning AI; it is separately pricing customer credit, contract duration, cash-flow coverage, power availability and re-leasing risk. Owning GPUs is no longer enough to guarantee cheap financing.

01Why does the Lambda–CoreWeave spread matter?

Lambda’s $926 million facility is secured by GPUs and related cash flows, serves an investment-grade customer and amortizes with the contract and equipment life. It priced at SOFR plus 300 basis points. CoreWeave’s $2.6 billion facility priced at SOFR plus 550 basis points, while roughly five-year debt funds customer contracts averaging about three years. The roughly 250-basis-point gap is not a simple company ranking; it shows credit markets directly pricing contract structure.

02Why do Oracle orders not equal free cash flow?

Oracle’s first-quarter RPO reached $664 billion and infrastructure-cloud revenue rose 121%, providing powerful demand evidence. Free cash flow was negative $5 billion in the same quarter, and the company completed a $20 billion at-the-market equity raise. Backlog supports future revenue visibility, but data centers, power and GPUs require cash first. Conversion speed and capital structure still determine shareholder cash returns.

03Primary markets remain open, but funding is broadening

Amazon’s debut sterling bond drew about 2.5 times coverage, showing that high-quality issuers can still fund, although demand is not unlimited. Vantage’s reported talks with PIMCO and PGIM for up to $2 billion of revolving loans show AI infrastructure broadening beyond traditional banks and bonds into insurance, private-credit and infrastructure capital.

04What is actually scarce?

The most financeable projects are not necessarily those with the most GPUs. They combine credible payers, sufficiently long contracts, secured power and permits, controllable delivery schedules and assets that can be reused or re-leased after the first contract. Capital costs increasingly separate announced orders from financeable cash flow.

What would change our view?

The view weakens if investment-grade customers cut AI spending, long contracts are cancelled or renegotiated, GPU re-leasing value falls quickly, or power and permitting delays push cash receipts behind debt service. If even high-quality contracted projects cannot raise capital, the regime may be shifting from segmentation toward systemic credit contraction.

Key questions

Is AI infrastructure running out of money?

No. Funding channels remain open, but the dispersion in capital costs is widening.

Why is GPU collateral no longer enough?

GPUs depreciate and face price and utilization risk after a contract ends. Lenders care more about durable payment sources and re-leasing capacity.

Does large RPO guarantee strong cash flow?

No. RPO is contracted revenue not yet recognized. It still requires construction, delivery and collection, while heavy investment can pressure free cash flow.

Does this mean the AI cycle is ending?
