Who Captures the Value of AI Infrastructure Spending?
HPE × ANET × DELL × VRT | Comparative Research | 17 September 2026
ACIS research priority: ANET for value-capture quality, VRT for physical bottlenecks, HPE for post-merger improvement, and DELL for demand validation. AI infrastructure value is shifting from server shipment volume toward networking, power, cooling and cash conversion.
Quality leader: high-margin networking and value capture
Bottleneck beneficiary: power, distribution and cooling
Improvement watch / demand validation: cash proof required
Thesis maintained | Demand expansion continues | Value capture diverges
01 · RESEARCH BRIEF
The one-minute brief
Our conclusion is explicit: all four companies benefit from AI buildout, but they do not retain value equally. ANET currently shows the strongest value-capture quality. VRT has the clearest physical-bottleneck thesis. HPE offers improvement potential after Juniper, subject to organic-growth and cash-flow proof. DELL is the most direct demand barometer, but orders still need to become earnings and cash. Research priority: ANET quality leader → VRT bottleneck beneficiary → HPE improvement watch → DELL demand validation. This is a research ranking, not a valuation-blind purchase ranking.
Audio transcript
Our research priority is ANET as the quality leader, VRT as the bottleneck beneficiary, HPE as an improvement watch, and DELL as demand validation. AI infrastructure value is shifting from server shipment volume toward networking, power, cooling and the ability to convert orders into profit and cash. This ranking reflects value-capture quality, not a valuation-blind purchase order.
Known facts and open questions
- Type
- Research Memo | Company comparison
- As of
- 17 September 2026; different fiscal periods
- Evidence
- Company earnings releases and acquisition agreement
- Comparability
- Company and segment margins, GAAP and non-GAAP differ
01 | ANET | Quality leader
Networking and software show strong value capture; valuation, concentration and competition remain key checks
02 | VRT | Bottleneck beneficiary
Power delivery and cooling determine time-to-service; execution, margins and returns require validation
03 | HPE | Improvement watch
Juniper raises networking weight; organic growth, integration costs and FCF must confirm the upgrade
04 | DELL | Demand validation
AI-server orders provide the clearest demand signal; backlog must convert into profit and operating cash flow
02 · THESIS → EVIDENCE → UPDATE
What changed in the thesis?
Separate demand from retained profit
- Prior thesis
- AI construction increases demand for servers, networking and supporting equipment.
- New evidence
- Dell orders expand, HPE networking grows, Arista sustains high margins and Vertiv extends its power capabilities.
- Updated view
- Demand thesis maintained; revenue passing through a business differs from value retained by it.
System bottlenecks broaden
- Prior thesis
- The 16 September infrastructure weekly emphasized rate pressure on valuation and financing.
- New evidence
- Network architecture, power availability and delivery speed affect project returns.
- Updated view
- Funding costs remain a common risk. Scarce system capabilities still need to generate cash.
03 · EVIDENCE & ANALYSIS
Evidence and analysis
01|Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE): networking mix
Fiscal Q3 2026 revenue was $12.2bn, up 34%. Networking revenue was about $2.893bn, up 74.9%, with a 22.0% segment operating margin. Juniper changes the business mix and comparison base; the reported increase must not be treated as wholly organic. Watch comparable growth, integration costs and free cash flow. [1]
02|Arista Networks (ANET): connectivity economics
Q2 2026 revenue was $3.036bn, up 37.7%. GAAP operating margin was 45.4%, versus 49.9% non-GAAP. Arista introduced 1.6Tbps networking platforms. These are company-level margins, not directly comparable with HPE Networking or Dell ISG segment figures. Customer concentration, competition, architecture changes and valuation remain material. [2]
03|Dell Technologies (DELL): orders must convert to cash
Fiscal Q2 2027 AI-server revenue was $16.4bn, orders $60.9bn and backlog $95bn. ISG revenue was $31.8bn and operating income $4.8bn; ISG includes servers, networking and storage, not AI servers alone. Company operating cash flow was about $2.2bn, down 13%, despite 58% revenue growth. Demand, earnings and cash conversion require separate checks. [3]
04|Vertiv (VRT): physical constraints
Vertiv supplies critical power, distribution and thermal management. On 2 September it announced an agreement to acquire UtilityInnovation Group, extending into microgrids and on-site power systems to reduce time-to-power. The transaction remained subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions; it was not a completed acquisition. Watch delivery, margins and returns on investment. [4]
04 · INVESTMENT IMPLICATIONS
Industry and asset implications
Demand is not uniform profitability
Servers incorporate substantial upstream component value. Networking software, architecture and power systems have different barriers and cost structures.
Current ACIS research ranking
ANET quality leader, VRT bottleneck beneficiary, HPE improvement watch, DELL demand validation; valuation remains a separate decision.
Project returns link all four
Rates, credit and customer cash flow influence AI spending. Backlog still requires delivery and collection.
05 · VALIDATION & RISKS
What to verify next
HPE | Integration
Comparable networking growth, business mix, integration costs and FCF.
Failure signal: Growth depends on consolidation without profit or cash improvement.
ANET | Platform economics
AI-networking sales, customer mix and GAAP/non-GAAP margin reconciliation.
Failure signal: Competition or architecture changes persistently erode margins.
DELL | Orders to cash
Backlog conversion, ISG profit, receivables, inventory and operating cash flow.
Failure signal: Profit growth persistently fails to improve cash generation.
VRT | Delivery
Power and cooling deliveries, capacity utilization and acquisition progress.
Failure signal: Delays, integration spending or idle capacity undermine returns.
What would change our view?
Supply constraints, price competition, customer concentration, integration costs, working-capital needs and project delays may weaken growth quality. Higher rates tighten customer financing and pressure valuations. Strong fundamentals alone do not establish attractive returns at any price.
06 · FAQ
Key questions
Which company most directly indicates AI-server demand?
Dell orders, revenue and backlog provide direct signals. Orders are not recognized revenue or guaranteed margin.
Is HPE networking growth all organic?
No. Juniper consolidation affects the comparison base; comparable growth needs separate analysis.
Does Arista’s higher margin make it the best investment?
It supports business quality, but returns also depend on price, competition, customer concentration and future growth.
Is Vertiv insulated from the AI spending cycle?
No. Customer financing, construction schedules and equipment delivery still affect order conversion.
07 · TERMS & SOURCES
